Overview

Design of a portable, battery-powered pruner for trimming small hedges and bushes. A one-week project with Arthur Hamon and Émilie Vaché, aimed at reinterpreting the identity of an existing brand (Bodum) to create a product for a completely different market.

Brief

Brief

The brief focused on translating Bodum’s visual identity into a new sector by designing a garden tool that remains both precise and comfortable to use.

Although ergonomics were not explicitly part of the brief, they quickly became a key driver of the design process. The design was refined through sketches and multiple foam prototypes to test proportions, grip, and handling. Each iteration both improved comfort and performance for extended outdoor use and reinforced the integration of Bodum’s formal identity. This dual focus on brand coherence and intuitive ergonomics ultimately shaped the final direction of the project.

The final design is a compact, battery-powered pruner with Bodum’s signature look, built for comfortable, precise trimming over long periods. To showcase the result as realistically as possible, a full-scale mock-up was produced by combining 3D printing with silicone moulding. The buttons were made from polyurethane foam to replicate their tactile quality, and custom Bodum stickers were adapted to this new product to ensure brand coherence. This process allowed us to experiment with a wide range of techniques and achieve a highly convincing prototype that fully responds to the initial brief.
