During the exploration phase for the future Shanghai Perfume Cultural Center, we focused on Chinese calligraphy, traditional ink brushes, and Shanghai’s vibrant tattoo culture as key sources of inspiration. We explored the parallels between writing on paper and marking the skin, as well as the symbolic connection between gestures, signs, and identity. Sketches and moodboards helped refine the concept of merging the act of writing with the act of applying perfume.

The design process translated cultural references into a functional product. Sketches and mock-ups tested proportions, handling, and application methods, while brush and bottle forms were refined for comfort and aesthetics. AI simulations visualized the product in use, showing how brush strokes create temporary calligraphic tattoos. We collaborated with a perfumer to develop the project’s two fragrances, each with a distinct personality and atmosphere, ensuring they aligned perfectly with the bottle, packaging, and overall concept.

The final design is Scribe, a fragrance bottle inspired by Chinese calligraphic culture and Shanghai’s tattoo scene. Instead of spraying, the perfume is applied directly onto the skin through brush strokes that form temporary calligraphic tattoos, creating an ephemeral and intimate experience that merges scent and visual expression. The object takes the shape of a calligraphy brush, rendered in muted, minimalist tones to emphasize simplicity of use. The packaging references early 20th century Shanghai incense burners, while it contains two gender-neutral fragrances developed with a perfumer to evoke a stroll through Yu Garden or the refuge of an old temple during a storm. The embossed recycled paper packaging presents the product without the use of ink, evoking a blank sheet of paper and highlighting both the fragrances and the cultural concept. Scribe stands as a statement product for the Shanghai Perfume Cultural Center, bridging heritage and contemporary fragrance design.
